In this episode, Tarun Das explains the importance of government reforms that are helping to open India’s economy to foreign business. He describes recent accomplishments like the manufacture and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines; the success of the country’s green agenda; positive economic relationships with the rest of ASEAN; and the expansion of trade agreements with the U.S., the EU and the U.K.
Tarun Das is currently the Chairman of the Institute of Economic Growth; Chairman of the Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation; and Chairman, Advisory Board, JCB India.
He is on the Board of Trustees of various non-profit institutions, including the Ananta Aspen Centre; Ananta Centre; the Aspen Institute, USA; Council on Energy Environment and Water; Singapore India Partnership Foundation; and the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations.
Mr. Das works closely on deepening international ties as Co-Chair of the U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue, and U.S.-India-Japan Strategic Dialogue, and a member of the India-Singapore Strategic Dialogue, and India-U.K. Climate Change and Energy Dialogue, amongst others.
He is India Chair of the Trilateral Commission and a member of the Chubb International Advisory Board.
Formerly, Mr. Das was the Director General of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 1967 to 2004; from 2004 to 2009 he was the Chief Mentor of CII. Mr. Das is the author of the book “Crossing Frontiers.” The government of India awarded Mr. Das the Padma Bhushan for his contributions in the field of trade and industry. He has also received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Warwick, U.K. and from Tel Aviv University, Israel, for extraordinary commitment to promoting the Indian Economy in the global arena; an Honorary CBE for his contribution to Indo-British relations.
Juan Luis Ortega is Executive Vice President, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance. He has executive operating responsibility for Chubb's general insurance business in 51 countries outside of North America, including commercial P&C, traditional and specialty personal lines, and accident and health (A&H) insurance. Overseas General is comprised of two major businesses: one with distribution through retail brokers in five regions of the world – Europe, Asia Pacific, Japan, Latin America and Eurasia & Africa – and the other an excess and surplus lines company with distribution through brokers in the London wholesale market and Lloyd’s. Mr. Ortega’s scope of responsibility includes all products, underwriting, claims, actuarial and support functions related to these businesses.
Mr. Ortega has 20 years of insurance industry experience. Prior to his current role, he served as Regional President of Latin America from 2016 to July 2019 and Regional President of the company’s Asia Pacific operations from 2013 to 2016, a period which included ACE’s acquisition of Chubb.
Mr. Ortega has also served as Senior Vice President, A&H, for the company's Asia Pacific and Latin America regions.
