1. A dairy facility incident

A dairy facility accidentally released 30m3 of water containing ammonia (NH3) into a river.

Effect
Pollution was detected in the river four days after the release. About 20km downstream was contaminated. 3.5 tons of dead fish were collected.

2. A swimming pool incident

Swimming pool chemicals merged with cleaning agent at a hotel spa facility.

Effect
The merged chemicals gave rise to a mustard gas claim, causing potential danger to employees and guests.

Chubb managed the on-site clean up.

CASE STUDY

3. A logistics warehouse incident

A heating oil tank attached to a logistics warehouse developed a fracture in an underground pipe.

Effect
Over time fuel oil seeped from the tank into the surrounding soil and groundwater, contaminating both the logistics warehouse land and the neighbouring business. The extent of the contamination was not realised until oil was noted in a nearby watercourse.

Cost
Estimated loss to the business could be £800,000.
