CASE STUDY

1. Waste to energy facility

Part A.
Bolts holding digestate tank to concrete base failed.

Effect
Flow of digestate broke through earth bund. Digestate flowed onto client’s adjacent field and entered land drains. Land drains discharged into the river and digestate seeped into groundwater.

Costs
Estimated clean up costs £260,000.

Part B
At the same facility, an operator leaves the pump going overnight and overfills the pressurised vessel where the valve has been blocked by debris.

Effect
The vessel explodes with the contents of the facility re-contaminating a recently contaminated field.

Costs
Estimated clean up costs £350,000, plus a business interruption claim of £250,000.

2. Composting waste incident

Composting green waste ignited spontaneously at a farm.

Effect
Water used by the fire brigade to extinguish the flames became contaminated by a slurry-like mixture from the compost. It reached a nearby stream and migrated to a lake causing a substantial number of fish to die and damage to the aquatic ecosystem. The Environment Agency required the company to carry out remediation..

Cost
Estimated loss to the business was £550,000.

3. Windfarm construction

During construction and operation of a windfarm, one of the turbines experienced a fault.

Effect
Due to the fault, a significant amount of hydrohalic fluid leaked from the turbine and caused damage to the local biodiversity and watercourse.

Cost
Estimated clean-up costs were in excess of £100,000.
